2 thoughts on “Henry Ossawa Tanner, The Annunciation”
Only yesterday (25th Mar 2022) did I discover this captivating artwork by Henry Ossawa Tanner. I think I will be returning to this scene in the future to discover what is going on. I am intrigued by the arrangement of cloth work which is in between Mary and the angel Gabriel. It conjures up two images for me: the womb which will be filled by the Conception of Jesus by the Holy Spirit; the discovery of the empty tomb on the first day of the week. What must Mary be pondering at this moment?
This is a great question, Steve. Thanks for interacting with Tanner’s work and this post. I love his painting on the annunciation. There is a freshness and wonder about Mary as she beholds the angelic visitor. She seems curious to me. What do you think?
