All I Want is Someone to Believe In

All I Want for Christmas Series Gfx_Web AdWho are your heroes these days? Have you ever had a chance to meet one of your heroes face to face?

As I continued our series “All I Want for Christmas” this weekend at Eastbrook Church we looked at David, one of the great heroes of the Bible. Building upon his life story, we studied the pivotal Scripture passage found in 2 Samuel 7:1-16, where God makes a series of significant promises to David. With a bit of quick work, I walked us through the longing for a new David figure that arose after David’s time, and is seen in the Psalms and the Prophets. I then tied it all together with a look at Jesus as the new David.

You can view a video of the message and the accompanying outline below. You can listen to the message via our audio podcast here. ||40days|| week two: acknowledge our longings

What do you dream about? What captures your imagination in the middle of the day? What secret longings do you have that you keep only to yourself or a close friend?

Each of us have longings that arise within the depths of our souls. It is part of what it means to be human. As Adele Calhoun writes, “The longing for something more, no matter how weak or crackling with heat, is the evidence that God is already at work in your life.”

Some of our longings are good. It is a good longing to achieve something meaningful with our work. It is an appropriate desire to leave a worthwhile legacy behind us. The craving to be loved by another is given to us by God. It is right that we long to see lost loved ones again.

But there are other longings we have that are bent toward wrong. When we long for harm to come Read More »

Saturday Prayer 45

All around me in the natural world, I see reminders of who You are, oh God.
Every season reveals Your person and glory.

In the beauty of deep skies,
in the variegated contrasting colors of falling leaves,
in the slanting shadows of autumn’s sunlight

All these things remind me that You are here
ever and always
You are God unchanging
in Your creativity and power

I praise You.

Saturday Prayer 30

Oh God, our Father,
through the holy wonder
of Your One and Only Son
reveal Yourself to me.

Oh Father,
I know it is sheer gift;
I know it is only by
the choosing of Your Son.

Oh God, our Father,
So long I have not known
Your life in my living;
reveal Yourself to me.

Saturday Prayer 25

I have seen You in the sanctuary and beheld Your power and Your glory. Because Your love is better than life, my lips will glorify You. I will praise You as long as I live, and in Your Name I will lift up my hands. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise You. (Psalm 63:2-5)

Lord, my eyes have seen You move in power both in times past and in the present. Lord, You are my hope and health and salvation. I know that Your love is better than life. In You is found my soul’s satisfaction.

Still, Lord, at times I turn away from You. There are moments where my mouth says one thing and my actions show something else. Take me deeper into the ways of life and satisfaction in You.

Lord, You are worthy of all worship and I want to praise You as long as I live. I know my best life is to be fully satisfied in You. Lead me into this reality.

Saturday Prayer 23

How abundant are the good things that You have stored up for those who fear You. (Psalm 31:19)

may I grow in reverent fear of You
even as I seek refuge in You.
You are the great King of the universe
and the Leader of my life.
When human strife and criticisms
arise like flames to consume wood,
keep me safe and sound
in Your overflowing goodness
and startling generosity.
If You are the great King over the universe
then certainly You are the king over my life.

Saturday Prayer 22

Lord, would You please give me an increasing vision of Your majesty? Would You grant me the ability to know Your presence, power and wonder? I long for that, Lord.

Instead, my eyes become caught up in all the things to do, the issues at hand, and the concerns of life. It can overwhelm me. Lord, would You please instead overwhelm me with You presence. Would You give me the grace and trust to walk with You and live with You daily.
