we know that a time is coming,
the great day of the LORD,
when You will stretch out Your hand
to judge the nations of the earth
and sweep away everything
from the face of the earth.
We tremble before You, LORD,
for who can truly stand in that day?
We seek You, LORD our God,
we seek righteousness and we seek humility
that You might shelter us on that day,
and save a remnant for Your name.
In this present day, we also tremble
over the distress that has come upon us.
Our strength is demolished
and the streets are deserted.
But You, LORD our God, are with us;
a Mighty Warrior who saves us.
Show forth Your great delight in us,
and in Your love rejoice over us with singing.
Remove from us the grief of our losses
and restore our fortunes before our very eyes.
All this we pray, through Jesus Christ,
to whom, with You and the Holy Spirit
be all honor and glory, now and forever.
This weekend at Eastbrook Church we began a new preaching series entitled “God in the Ruins: The Message of the Minor Prophets.”
At the end of the Hebrew Bible, our Old Testament, we find a collection of twelve small, yet powerful, books known as the Minor Prophets or “the Book of the Twelve.” The title “minor” refers to their length, and not to their significance, as each of these short books brings a powerful word from God to His people that challenges the status quo. As we walk through this entire collection, we will seek to hear God’s message to us today.
This series will eventually coincide with our Lenten journey to the Cross and Resurrection, with a devotional (more info to follow). Join us as we take a journey into the heart of God through this unique portion of the Scriptures.
The Lord within her is righteous; He does no wrong. Morning by morning He dispenses His justice, and every new day He does not fail. – Zephaniah 3:5
Lord, thank You for this new day where You are unfailing just and righteous.
Thank You for Your presence.
Thank You that You do no wrong.
Lord, please draw me near to You this day.
Bring me into Your presence where there is truth, life, grace, justice, and fullness of joy.
Reveal Yourself in my humble life.
Give me greater awareness of You.
[This is part of a series of prayer posts in 2012 that began here.]
There are portions of the Bible that the church has traditionally linked with the month-long time of preparation for the arrival of Christ’s coming at Christmas called Advent.
One of those is Zephaniah 3:14-20. While not many of us have likely spent much time in the Old Testament prophet Zephaniah, one of my favorite statements in the entire Bible is found here.
It is found in verse 17:
The LORD your God is with you,
He is mighty to save.
He will take great
delight in you,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over
you with singing.
Many times I struggle with understanding God’s love. I don’t easily grasp why He would come to save a desperate, sin-laden lot of people like us. I know that He loves the entire world and all created things (John 3:16), but that can seem agonizingly distant to me.Read More »
