Spectators

I like watching movies. I was watching one particular movie that won some Academy Awards and I was considering all of the other movies I had watched during the past months. I don’t even remember all of the movies I’ve watched recently. I was thinking about how easily I’ve slipped into simply sitting on the couch and watching things.

I was thinking about how I’ve been reduced to a spectator.

I went to church and watched the worship band, laughed at the video, enjoyed the preaching, and walked out again.

I was thinking about how our spectator culture breeds spectator followers of Jesus. We watch, we listen, we enjoy, and then we move on. We would never say we aren’t followers of Jesus, but we’re more spectators of the Jesus way than anything else.

  1. Good observation and comments on our spectator culture breeding and lending itself to spectator Christians. Your message humbles me, because I see myself in that category far too many times.
