A few week back at church, I sang a song I had written. Some folks had asked me about it.
The song was written for my home church while I was in college when the church was going through some difficult times in terms of loss. The song is entitled “There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy” and makes reference both to an old hymn of the same title and references the melody of the first line from a Rich Mullins song entitled “The Love of God.”
While I don’t get too excited about printing song lyrics without the music, I don’t have an mp3 that you could hear of the song, so here are the lyrics.
there’s a wideness in God’s mercy
that’s wide enough for you
it’s wide enough for me
together we can be in His love without conditions
it’s furious and free
His arms are open wide, He’s calling you and me
and He says, “all who are thirsty, come and drink,
and all who are hungry, come join the feast;
“and all you who are weeping and longing for your home, come,” He says, “come unto Me”
there is strength for every trial
and there’s many that come our way
He holds us up and walks with us,
so we can make it through each day
He gives us hope when we are hopeless,
in our dark and trying days
He is here and will be here always
chorus
there’s a peace beyond understanding,
it’s flowing from the Son
comforts our aching hearts
in this world of things gone wrong
and there is a home of true belonging with the Father up above
Jesus promised He’s making a place there for us
chorus
