Dispatches from Exponential 08, day 3.3

A few thoughts from David Putman, a pastor at Mountain Lake Church and a church planter himself. A lot of his thoughts were drawn from his recent book Breaking the Discipleship Code. You can interact with him at his blog here.

His thoughts were oriented around three questions:

  1. What is a follower of Jesus?
  2. How do people become followers of Jesus Christ?
  3. What does a missional follower of Jesus look like?

Here’s Putman’s definition of a follower of Jesus: “a follower of Jesus is someone who lives like Jesus, loves like Jesus, and leaves what Jesus left behind (that is, those who live and love like Jesus).”

Putman wasn’t about laying out a program, but a lifestyle marked by living like Jesus, loving like Jesus, and leaving a ‘legacy’ (not his words) of others who do the same.

Some good thoughts from a very passionate communicator. I thought a lot of it reminded me of what I’m investigating with spiritual pathway at Brooklife.

One of the things that I’m continuing to struggle with is whether it’s possible to bring together the incarnational, relational lifestyle of disciples while also creating a system by which space is created at the church for this sort of relational lifestyle to develop. Hmm.
