I mentioned this a few weeks back in brief form, but for those of us who give strong attention to the topic of discipleship in the church, I wanted to draw attention to a very helpful resource.
Brian Hofmeister, a friend and Pastor of Spiritual Formation at Christ’s Church in Albany, NY, offers an extremely helpful review and assessment of significant models of discipleship today. If this is a topic of interest to you (it had better be at some level, if you are in leadership in any form at a church!!), take a look at his comments on the following:
– an overview of key issues and outline of Brian’s approach to the following posts
– Xenos in Ohio
– Life Transformation Groups – Neil Cole, author of Organic Church
– G-12 (Government of 12)
– Comprehensive curriculum approaches – Randy Pope’s D-Teams and Steve Sonderman’s Soul Purpose
– “Jesus Carbon Copy” – advocacy for Brian’s own approach involving intentionality and proximity
– a debrief of the conversation and responses to these different approaches
– some of Brian’s further thoughts about discipleship, pt 1: roles and goals in discipleship
– pt 2: maturity mile markers in discipleship
As our own spiritual formation team is working on the pathway for growth at Brooklife, I was pleased to have such a great conversation partner out there to spur us onward toward developing a meaningful approach to discipleship.

Matthew,
It was great to have your contribution to the discussion.
The further I get into hosting the discussion on discipleship the less I’m convinced that we’ll all arrive at super-model to cover all the bases.
However, I’m becoming more convinced than ever that discipleship will not happen without continually increasing intentionality, and that a plan/model is one of the better ways to keep intentionality when emotional drive and mental rational goes through the usual roller coaster of ups and downs.
May God’s blessings be with Brooklife and wherever God is taking all of you next.
