What Happened to Christmas?

On November 29, I kicked off our new series at Brooklife Church called “What Happened to Christmas?”  The sermon was focused on how we prepare for Christmas in a world that, although it prepares in many ways, often gets it wrong.

I suggest that we can prepare for Christmas rightly be doing three things:

  1. Looking longingly for God
  2. Remembering the darkness in our lives and our world
  3. Giving until it costs us something

You can listen to the message here.

We have joined the Advent Conspiracy this year. Find out more about this great project here.

I ended my message with these words:

On a frosty night, many years ago, with the smell of animal dung in the air, a group of nobodies gathered around to watch a nobody baby be born and to celebrate Him.

And on that dark night, the light shone and broke through the darkness.

And as the years went, the light grew, and the light broke through more and more dark areas, living through people who loved God, who loved well, and who loved justice.

And the world was never the same.

May we be people like that this Christmas.

  1. Uh, you forgot to mention The Grinch…

Seriously, though, it is amazing to consider the unclean and humble setting of Christ’s birth. It was not as pretty as the manger models many of us put out at Christmas make it out to be.
