Super Disciple

When I grew up, I was fascinated with comic books, particularly that super-hero who mixed everyday life with heroic deeds, Spider-Man. Spider-Man had spectacular traits: greater than average strength, the ability to cling to walls, his unearthly spider-sense, and web-shooters that he had developed with his own know-how. At the same time, he was an average, even geeky, guy by day named Peter Parker.

Today with our working group leaders at Eastbrook, I used an exercise of drawing up what a ‘super disciple’ might look like at our church. What are the traits or characteristics that would describe the ideal or fully mature disciple in our community? How are we working with God in moving people toward maturity in Christ? What are our aims?

What do you think? What are the characteristics that would describe a ‘super disciple’ from your perspective?

  1. SD would have super-vision to see far beyond the present where the enemy of all Super Disciples lurks—Distracto, one of the sworn enemies of Super Disciple who likes to confuse and confound, calling SD’s attention to trivial and unimportant matters.

If you recall Super Disciple Issue #34, Distracto nearly defeated Super Disciple by causing him to become involved in a petty name calling incident that quickly deteriorated into mayhem. It was only when Super Disciple returned to his Book of Truth that things were set right. It really got exciting towards the end when Distracto snatched the Book from him–but was sent scurrying when Super Disciple used his memory to recall powerful words that Distracto couldn’t defeat.

This was also the issue where Proverbio, the hero of Wisdom, appeared.

  2. A Super Disciple would be someone who would not be afraid to share the Good News of Jesus to anyone at anytime with no regard to their own failings or insecurities but would have complete trust in the Holy Spirit to guide their words and actions to be exactly what the person needed to hear or see at that exact moment in time.

    1. Cynthia, thanks for the feedback. I love the themes you touch on in your response: evangelism, confidence, reliance upon the Holy Spirit, understanding identity in Christ.
