Enduring Relationships and Sex

Last Tuesday at The Ave, I talked about God speaking a resounding ‘yes! it is good!’ to sex for women and men within enduring, covenantal relationships that we call marriage.

I mentioned in my talk that the Shepherd Express recently published the results from their annual Sex Survey in which they addressed the longevity of relationships for people in Milwaukee. You can read the sad results in this link (http://www.shepherd-express.com/3_17_05/newsandviews.htm), but let me summarize the results:
– 25% of people’s longest relationships lasted 2 to 4 years
– 20% of people’s longest relationships lasted 4 to 7 years
– 15% of people’s longest relationships lasted less than 1 year

While we don’t know what the other 40% of respondents said, we have here that 60% of people responding saw their most enduring relationship as 7 years or less. Wow!

When God outlined His intent for sexual union to be a reflection of enduring (that is, not short), covenantal (that is, binding in nature) relationships, the state of things is even more distressing.

What does it look like for us to be people who hold onto the ‘yes!’ of God about sex without dashing it to pieces within short-lived, uncommitted relationships?

We need His help! Thankfully, He is more than willing to help us because He loves to answer our cries to Him.

  1. I just wanted to say that you and Jenny have done a great job with these tough topics. Last week, your honest ideas were much easier to digest than typical conservative Christian side-talk. And this tuesday was fantastic; the combination of Dan’s story and process, your disection of Isaiah 53, and Kelly’s experience was a great way to make this sometimes distant topic/idea very real and very important, something to be dealt with responsibly. I’m eager for the next few weeks, I have a lot more to learn and understand.

  3. Thanks for your encouraging response, Sam. It has been difficult to know how best to address these topics, but I feel a strong guidance from God in it all. I am looking forward to the next two weeks, as well.
