Trudging Onward

sun-scorched standing
between soul-sharp rocks
naked, beaten, tired

the cool of nightfall
envelopes me
there is nowhere to rest

trudging onward
upon rough ground
feet are bleeding wounds

swollen-tongued and
stomach tight
misery eyes dart off

where is hope
and peace here?
where is laden life?

knotted back pinched
calves pull tight
tripping down to dust

dirt poor and needy
now starving deep
weeping under this weight

where is hope
and peace here?
where is laden life?

  1. I’m just wondering about the two ways a person can look at this.

Is it the viewpoint of a lost soul that has not met Jesus?
Is it the viewpoint of a Christ-follower that still suffers- that “still hasn’t found what I’m looking for” as Bono puts it.

Or can it be both? And if it can, what does that say?
Sorry to go all English on you.
