What Must God Be Like?

A professor of mine in my college days enjoyed asking the question “what must God be like?” For him, that question became a springboard into a larger world of reflection upon the wonders of God’s being and creativity.

“What must God be like,” he would wonder aloud, “that the rings of Saturn are wound together in braids?”

I’ve been borrowing his question recently, as I’ve been marveling at God’s beautiful, stunning, and often surprising creation around me.

What must God be like that clouds take shape in wondrous billows and wispy fingers from the rising water vapors of the earth, only to return to the earth as rain and begin the cycle again?

Isn’t it odd that clouds provide such a variety of shapes, sizes, textures, and shades of color from brilliant whites to rugged grays? Have you stared at the clouds recently? Give it some time and purposeful study in these summer days. You will see things there that will surprise and awe you.

What must God be like to give such artistry to the skies in such an apparently untouched cycle of nature’s processes?

Truly awesome.

  1. As an amateur artist, I’m always humbled that my work does little more than capture a brief snapshot of God’s ever dynamic creativity.
