Bill Hybels – Final Words (LS09)

Here are Bill Hybels’ final words of encouragement to us as leaders as we move beyond the Leadership Summit 2009:

  1. Establish a time and a place to meet personally with God everyday – because leaders need something fresh from God everyday.
  2. Commit to reading good books, at least 30 minutes a day – because leaders need to be challenged in their thinking.
  3. Review your replenishment strategy. How are you making sure that your bucket is full and not running toward empty?
  4. Resolve to say ‘yes’ to God every time His Spirit prompts you to do something. “God, I’m going to say ‘yes’ – what’s the question?”
  5. Live your one life as if it’s the real thing. Your life matters. What you do now will last for eternity.

  1. Matt –

Thanks for this. I was unable to go to the LS this year – first I’ve missed in a while. I always looked forward to Hybels’ final talk and several of them have been memorable moments in my life. My one regret is that its been hard to follow through on the notes and the actionable items. Best to you!

    grace and peace

  2. Glad this was of help, Andy.

I completely understand the regret you are mentioning at the end. All of these posts on the summit were my attempt at processing through the conference sessions and taking away one or two concrete things for my life and ministry from the speakers.

  3. This is so ‘right-on’. Items 2-5 depend on item 1. If any of us heard that God would be showing up at a given place every day in our community, there is no doubt that this time would be the first thing we put on our calendar as we plan for the week. I suspect that even a large number of unbelievers would show up each day.

The thing is, God **does** show up every day, and you don’t even need to drive or walk to be with Him. Make item 1 your ultimate priority, and everything else falls into place.

  4. Hi,

I read through some of the key points you posted from the leadership summit and you are a far better note taker than I am. Would you mind sending me your notes? My email is mok.meir@gmail.com. Thank you so much!

  5. Good stuff. I’m starting to disagree with #2 though. It’s tough to find a good book with a recent publish date. It seems as though everyone keeps saying the same stuff. The pop market has also hurt the art of writing good literature.

I’d enjoy going back to some classics, but uninterrupted time is scarce commodity.

I wonder if a little alone time for listening and prayer might produce better results than reading.
