“Notice Me”

In the recent discussion about the value of Twitter, some folks commented on the tendency of folks to be shameless self-promoters in the new media.

Seth Godin has a great post that addresses this in very short form. He writes that the new mantra of the web is: “notice me.”

He goes on to suggest that “Far better than being noticed:

  • Trusted
  • Engaged with
  • Purchased from
  • Discussed
  • Echoed
  • Teaching us
  • Leading”

Definitely some ideas worth thinking about.

  1. The narcissistic tendencies of web use these days is more than a little disturbing. Maybe we don’t think anyone cares about the big stuff in our lives, so we’ve moved on the broadcasting the little stuff? I wonder how online social networking would change if individuals were to experience genuine care?

    1. I agree with your comment that this narcissism is disturbing, Brian. This has gone from a vice to a virtue in our day.

At the same time, many talk about the ‘opening up’ of their lives to others through things like Twitter of updating their status on Facebook.

I still think that there is great potential for these social networking tools to augment the care and relationship we receive through our communities.

But, if there is no care or community in the first place, most of the tweeting and updates are, I think, genuine cries to know and be known.
