Francis Chan, the Big Red Tractor … and the church

Take 5 minutes and 19 seconds to watch this parable about the church, our supernatural God, and a big red tractor with Francis Chan. You will not regret it.

[Update: March 2010 – unfortunately, this Vimeo clip was altered sometime recently. I have re-embedded the video here:

[Another online version is available at YouTube from someone who recorded the clip at the Verge 10 Conference. Here it is:]

  1. Cool video, it’s nice to see modern parables, rather than just illustrative stories.

And he makes a good point with regards to the Church forgetting that we already have an amazing manual for life. As I’ve grown in my faith I’ve found that to be the biggest struggle; trying to follow the example put forth in the Gospels, and also finding a community that understands, respects, and follows those Biblical teachings as well. It’s sad to see a group struggling because they’re not following Step One that Jesus taught us.

    1. I agree with you in both points, Sam. It’s refreshing to see story used as more than just an illustration but as making the complete point in itself. We’ve largely lost the power of parables today.

Also, I think that you are making a great point about the sad fact that many individuals and church communities fail to really ‘understand and follow the manual’ of Scripture. Not that it’s a rigid life-manual, but it is God’s powerful truth to us about how the church and life ‘work’ best.
