Is Social Media a Fad?

The world we live in has changed. The way we do ministry in the church is changing and must change.

If you didn’t know it yet then you should watch this video, while considering these questions:

  • how is the church (generally or your church specifically) doing at engaging with social media?
  • how are you doing at connecting via social media with people in your life?

Thanks to Tony Steward and Adam Bradley for bringing this to my attention.

  1. Matt, maybe a better question than whether social media is a fad is to ask if social media is relevant to your audience (or congregation). Social media, like any form of media (radio, TV, online, print, etc.) is merely a distribution channel. It’s another means by which a story can be told, or where people can engage each other…two concepts that ought to come naturally to the church!

    1. Good point, Michael. I largely agree with you that social media like any other form of media and should be evaluated in one way by its relevance or pertinence to the audience you are trying to reach. Like you said, it becomes a means by which we can speak or connect with others.

At another level, however, I do think we would do well to consider the medium not only for its usefulness but for what it communicates by its very nature. The medium is part of the message and has in-built issues, both positive and negative to it. This is true of television, print, or social media.

I believe that we need to evaluate both the pragmatic and philosophical aspects of the media we utilize.
