The NIV 2011: Sorting through the Changes

For those of you who follow this sort of thing, there is a revised version of the New International Version of the Bible coming in 2011. This is an update of the 1984 version of the NIV that also takes into account the recent TNIV (Today’s New International Version) published in 2005.

There has been much discussion about how the NIV 2011 relates to both the NIV 1984 and the TNIV. I was very thankful to Scot McKnight of North Park Seminary for passing along the following link to an in-depth comparison of the differences between NIV 1984, TNIV, and NIV 2011. I found this to be very helpful as I evaluate what my thoughts are about this updated translation of the NIV. I have used the TNIV since it came out and have been very happy with it overall.

You can find out more about the NIV 2011 update at the following sources:

  • generally at Biblica’s web-site here
  • watch a brief introduction to the translation from the Dr. Douglas Moo, Chair of the Executive Committee, here
  • find out who the members of the translation committee are here
