Through the Bible in 2011…there’s still time

There is still time to join, if you would like join me and others at Eastbrook Church reading the Bible through this coming year, drop me an email (see below).

I am going to utilize the daily calendar from One Year Bible. You can utilize this as a print-out to stick in your Bible, visit the web-page daily to access the readings (www.oneyearbibleonline.com), or access the mobile version of the site through your smart-phone (http://mobile.oneyearbibleonline.com).

Each day will have 4 readings: Old Testament, New Testament, Psalm, and Proverb. When you read each day, I’d ask you to do three things:

  1. ask God to speak to you through the readings,
  2. ask God to speak to others who are reading the Scripture daily,
  3. quietly talk with God about what you read

Beginning January 1, I will be posting a devotional thought on one of the daily readings at least once per week here on my blog if you’d like to visit and comment.

I will also send out an email twice per month to everyone who has signed up to see how the reading is going, to encourage you to keep going, and to ask if you would share something that God is teaching you through the Bible. (For security reasons, I will keep your email blind copied so that others will not be able to access your email address.)

Again, if you would like join me and others at Eastbrook in reading the Bible through this coming year, drop me an email:

  1. Day 4 of readings and so far so good, although it is
proving to be pretty challenging because… I had been used to
reading short passages and spending more time reflecting ,
journaling and praying through them. Now I spend more time reading
and find less time to go deeper. I like to read ALL the readings at
one sitting so I can then try to discern which one I should focus
on… Any suggestions other than what has already been posted? I
really don’t want this to turn into a “task” to complete! Be
assured that you are all in my prayers… that the Holy Spirit
would speak to all of us during this journey!

  2. Hello! Don’t know if this’ll help but here’s what my wife and I have been doing. We read thru the passages together — I read ’em out loud and she listens and elbows me if I go too fast. We do some in the morning before we get out of bed and then try to finish the rest at night before we fall asleep. It’s a great way to bookend the day. We try to start each session asking the Spirit to illuminate the readings and to make sure we’re not rushing or getting legalistic about the whole thing. I’ve been using the PocketBible app on my iPad which allows you to have the reading plan, Bible and up to 3 commentaries open on the screen at the same time, which is nice. When we have a little extra time, we delve more deeply into the text/commentaries and discuss how the verses apply to our lives. Usually takes us about 20-30 minutes/day. Hope this helps. Thanks, Matt, for all your encouragement!!

  3. though not ‘with’ you per say, i too am reading through the Bible in a year, for about the 8th time or so, I’ve lost count. I use the DJ reading program. God is speaking to me about patience. 1 Tim 1:16 i carried with me yesterday, and when i seemed to have fallen short of patience (I lovingly warned someone, and when he reacted with anger, i misunderstood it to be directed at me– we are cross cultural and cross linguistic, i lost my temper…but today God spoke again, Prov. 9:8, and i realized this brother has some wisdom, as when the dust settled, he acted lovingly).
It is amazing how my reading plan over the years has corresponded with what is going on in my life, whether i’m behind in the reading, on time, or ahead…the word is truly alive ! Also, reading through that many times is made me really know God’s word, essential for ministering to the lost and broken.

I need to add memorization….i am sporatic w/that discipline.

    Thanks for ‘listening’…

    1. Thank you so much for the visit and comments, Karen. I love hearing how God is speaking to people through His word. I agree that it is very divinely interesting how the prearranged reading plan syncs up with things God is doing in or speaking into my life at that time. Just the other day, someone commented to me how amazing it is that God simultaneously speaks to each and every person on this globe in personal ways. Amazing!
