A Prayer inspired by Hebrews 3:7-19

image 3 - Hebrews

Throughout our new series “The Final Word: Knowing Christ through Hebrews,” I am writing prayers related to the text on which we are preaching each week. This prayer is drawn from Hebrews 3:7-19. The complete list of prayers inspired by Hebrews is included at the bottom of this post. You could also view my message, “Soft Hearted,” from this passage here.

Today, our Father, we hear You speaking,
just as You did to those who went before us in the faith,
inviting them to an Exodus of freedom
and the Promised Land of life with You.

Today, Lord Jesus, we hear You speaking,
as the final word of God bringing life.
In our noisy world that distracts us at every turn,
help us to heed and obey Your invitation.

Today, Holy Spirit, we hear You speaking,
through the words of Holy Scripture
and in the quietness of our hearts.
Strengthen us to respond with willing hearts.

We admit, O God, that You are faithful
but we are often more like Your people of times past
hot and cold, on again-off again, in our pursuit of You.
Forgive us, renew us, and set us on the path again.

All this we pray in Your name, Triune God—
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—
forever speaking and forever searching
to whom be all honor and glory, now and forever.
