After the stunning massacre of Iraqis by a group of Marines in Haditha, there have been moves to educate Marines on proper military values in their training.
As I reflected on this, I was reminded of the overwhelming discussion of ‘values’ within America during the last presidential elections and ever after. ‘We need better values in our country and representing us in public offices,’ people would say.
But the problem isn’t an education on values. The problem is that we are people.
People cannot hold up values on our own. We might believe them. They might become life convictions.
But values in themselves cannot change us. We need the Holy Spirit of God living within us to truly change our lives.
Any external values education will help to a very limited degree. What we need is transformation. What we need is renovation. Thus the title of this blog.
