Philip Yancey, that most exquisite of evangelical writers, has an excellent, brief article on sin and brokenness that I read this morning. Yancey’s take on things connects deeply with me. The connection between sin and brokenness at both the personal and social level is one that I have spent a lot of time pondering. (You can read my own article “Broken and Weak” on this topic at Relevant Magazine’s online site here.)
Here’s the final paragraph of the article, but I must say that it will be worth your while to read the whole thing:
God’s grace, the only solution to death and evil, comes free of charge, apart from law, apart from any human efforts toward self-improvement. For a free gift, we need only hold out open, needy hands—the most difficult gesture of all for a self-righteously evil person.

Hey Matt,
All I can find are the first line or two of this on Relevant thanks to google – can’t even get a cached copy of it. Any chance you have it in a format I could read via email?
Thanks!

Thanks for bringing my attention to the fact that the Relevant Magazine article I wrote is no longer available online.
I’ve re-posted it to my blog here for you and everyone else: http://wp.me/pf93W-cZ.
