Who is at the Center?

He must become greater; I must become less. – John 3:30

Not too long, I was giving a message about growing beyond ourselves by having Jesus at the center of our lives. John the Baptist has always been a striking example to me of what it means to have Jesus at the center and to know our rightful place in relation to Him. His words offered above are particularly powerful in this regard.

John knew who he was – the one pointing to Jesus, who he was not – not the Messiah, and who Jesus was – the Messiah of God, the Son of God, and the Lamb of God. In light of this, he lived his life centered around Jesus, even when his own disciples were troubled by the way in which John and his ministry were fading into the background (3:26).

This leads me to ponder how our lives can be like John’s life with Jesus at the center: Jesus must become greater, I must become less. In our society suffering from a pervasive self-centered way of living, living with God at the center is a radically unique way to approach our existence.
