The Word (discussion questions)

Here are the discussion questions that accompany my message at Eastbrook Church this week titled “The Word” on John 1:1-3. This message was the first in our new series, “Looking for God.”

Discussion Questions:

1. In our culture today, once we pass by Thanksgiving Day, we immediately move into a flurry of Christmas preparations. While there are many ways that we prepare for Christmas externally, what are you doing to prepare internally for Christmas?

2. Read some or all of the following Scripture passages and write down some notes on what God’s ‘word’ does in each setting: Psalm 33:6; Psalm 107:20; Psalm 119:105; Isaiah 55:10-11; Joel 1:1.

3. Now read John 1:1-18, paying careful attention to the mentions of ‘the word’. What is different, new, or unique about God’s ‘word’ in John 1 in comparison with the passages mentioned in question 2?

4. Read aloud Genesis 1:1-2 and John 1:1-3. The similarity of sentences is no mistake. John is helping us to see that with Jesus’ arrival a new beginning (the literal meaning of ‘Genesis’) is taking place. 2 Corinthians 5:17 is a great summary of how new beginning happens in peoples’ lives. Take some time to consider whether you have invited God to start something new in your life through Jesus Christ. If not, ask Him to do so. If you have, then talk with someone about what that has meant to you.

5.  John 1:1-3 is a powerful expression of Jesus’ identity. Reflect on these statements:

  • “the Word was with God” – in relationship to God yet distinct as a person
  • “He was with God in the beginning” – not created but already with God
  • “through Him all things were made” – all creation came into being through Him
  • “the Word was God” – not just divine, but part of the God-head; sharing the being and essence of God

6. One practical challenge Pastor Matt offered in his message was to read through the Bible in a year starting in January. This is a straightforward way of letting God speak His Word into our lives. Will you do this? Find a friend to read with for encouragement.

  1. I found a Lifeway advent Bible study to help me focus on the true meaning of Christmas. This new year I’m reading through the Bible for the fourth time – it is challenging, but can be done. The blessings and growth that come with it are immeasureable.

  2. Agh – from Life Guide – Advent of the Savior by Cindy Burch. I’m doing the study itself on Saturday, then posting thoughts on the blog on Sunday.
