This weekend at Eastbrook Church I continued our series on the Holy Spirit with a message on the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
I drew from 1 Corinthians 12-14, Romans 12, and Ephesians 4:1-16 for this message in order to address many questions that we have about the Holy Spirit and the gifts that He gives.
You can listen to my message at the Eastbrook web-site here. You can also follow the RSS feed for Eastbrook sermons or follow Eastbrook Church on Twitter or Facebook. A slightly revised message outline is included below:
What are spiritual gifts?
- Grace-gifts (Romans 12:3, 6)
- Spiritual manifestations (1 Corinthians 12:7)
The Source of spiritual gifts
- Holy Spirit of God (1 Corinthians 12:4)
- God’s gracious will (Romans 12:3, 6)
- God’s sovereign will (1 Corinthians 12:7, 11, 18 24)
Types of spiritual gifts
- Three descriptive words (1 Corinthians 12:4-6)
- The lists (1 Corinthians 12:7-11, 27-30; Romans 12:6-8; Ephesians 4:11)
Two challenges with spiritual gifts
- Jealousy: disparaging our gifts (1 Corinthians 12:15-20)
- Pride: over-emphasizing certain gifts (1 Corinthians 12:21-26)
The goal of spiritual gifts
- Action – use them (Romans 12:6)
- Body-building – edifying the church (1 Corinthians 12:7; 14:5, 12, 17, 26; Ephesians 4:12-13)
