“My heart is not proud, LORD, my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.
But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child I am content.
Israel, put your hope in the LORD both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 131)
Humble me, LORD, as I live with You and before You.
Save me from thinking too highly of myself—
of flying off in fantastic imaginings about myself.
And save me also from thinking too lowly of myself—
of burying myself in self-hatred or false humility.
Instead, hold me in Your powerful presence,
Your gracious presence where true love is found,
that there I might come to know who I truly am
and be at peace with You in that knowledge.
From that place help me to live freely and lightly,
unencumbered from proving myself
or living for other’s imprisoning opinions
or seeking to fulfill bizarre expectations of who I think I should be.
Instead, let me live all life with You,
content to grow daily from glory to glory,
at peace with my weakness and imperfections,
letting You transform me in these places
instead of trying to make myself better in my own strength.
Lord, bring me into the joyful freedom
of true humility as I live with You and before You.
