Here are discussion questions that accompany my message “Corinth: Explosion of Life” from our series “Light for the City” at Eastbrook this past weekend on 1 Corinthians 15.
Discussion Questions:
1. How often do you think about life after death or the resurrection? When you think about it, what comes into your mind?
2. Read John chapter 20 where we encounter Jesus alive after His crucifixion. What do you notice about Jesus’ resurrection appearance that is different from His life before the crucifixion? Why do you think this might be significant? If you were there, how might you have responded to Jesus?
3. In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul begins by reminding his readers of the Gospel. How would you summarize what he is saying? Why do you think Paul emphasizes the resurrection so much here?
4. Throughout 1 Corinthians 15:12-34, Paul is making his case for the importance of the resurrection. In these verses, what things are tied into the resurrection? Why does this matter for us?
5. Count the appearances of the word ‘body’ in 1 Corinthians 15:35-49. What do you think that Paul is trying to say about the nature of our resurrection? Why is this important to his hearers at that time? Why is it important for us today?
6. Paul links our behavior, or ethics, closely with the idea of resurrection in verses 29-34 and 58. Read those verses. How well are you doing at living in light of your future resurrection? What is one way you might live differently because of the future bodily resurrection?
7. Paul concludes this chapter by celebrating Jesus’ victory over death and sin (1 Corinthians 15:54-57). Take some time this week to celebrate the resurrection, whether on your own or in your small group. Thank God; praise Him; tell others about your hope in Him.
