This past weekend at Eastbrook Church, I launched a new series titled “Looking for God” with my message, “The Word,” drawing on John 1:1-3. I’m including the text here:
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
I used the metaphor of a 2-act play with an intermission to organize my message.
Act I: In Times Past, The Word of the Lord Has Spoken
- The Word that creates (creation – Genesis 1)
- The Word that saves (Noah – Genesis 6-9)
- The Word that gives purpose (Abraham – Genesis 15)
- The Word that instructs (Moses – Exodus 20-24)
- The Word that blesses (David – 2 Samuel 7)
- The Word that corrects (The Prophets)
Intermission: God’s Silence
The days are coming, declares the Sovereign LORD, when I will send a famine through the land— not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD. (Amos 8:11)
Act II: Now, The Word is Here
- The Word that is in the beginning (John 1:1)
- The Word that created everything (John 1:3)
- The Word that is with God (John 1:1, 2)
- The Word that is God (John 1:1)
