There are some incredibly gifted artists at Eastbrook Church. We steadily look for ways to encourage the arts in our church in ways that glorify God and also display meaningful aesthetics. An excellent gift to our church is the artwork developed for our current series on Proverbs called “Words to Live By.” Two artists from our church, Bliss Lemmon and Laura Gottinger, created some wonderful work for this series which is on display near the cross in our worship hall. If you haven’t seen it, please take some time to appreciate their work as you worship on Sunday. Here is their artist statement for this work.
These pieces are inspired by verses from Proverbs Chapter 3. Sweeping color, metallic ink and natural imagery all contribute to the visual expression of wisdom in these pieces. Laura used various printing methods to accomplish the metallic patterns. The colors were inspired by the references to silver and gold and the watery depths.
Blessed are those who find wisdom,
those who gain understanding,
for she is more profitable than silver
and yields better returns than gold.
She is more precious than rubies;
nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant ways,
and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her;
those who hold her fast will be blessed.
By wisdom the LORD laid the earth’s foundations,
by understanding he set the heavens in place;
by his knowledge the watery depths were divided,
and the clouds let drop the dew.
