As I prepared my message this past week entitled “The God Who Is Just and Saves,” I utilized a number of resources alongside of the Bible that I found helpful in shaping my thoughts. Here are four that I thought were worth sharing.
On the topic of longing, particularly the longing for justice in our world, I was helped by two books:
- Simply Christian by N. T. Wright – see especially chapter one: “Putting the World to Rights”
- The Reason for God by Tim Keller – see especially chapter four: “The Church is Responsible for So Much Injustice”
Looking more particularly at the concept of justice in the Hebrew prophets, particularly in Isaiah, I turned toward these resources:
- The Book of Isaiah, 2 volumes by John Oswalt – my constant companion in this series and, in my opinion, the best evangelical commentary on this prophetic book
- The Prophecy of Isaiah by Alec Motyer
- The Jesus Way by Eugene Peterson – see chapter seven: “Isaiah of the Exile”
- Good News About Injustice by Gary Haugen – the Founder of International Justice Mission wrote this book which I first read while on staff at World Relief more than 10 years ago
- Generous Justice by Tim Keller

Thank you for the suggested books. I’ve pretty much used ISAIAH: GOD SAVES SINNERS by Raymond Ortlund. I’m looking forward to seeing what these others say, Isaiah being one of my favorite books.
Another great resource for studying Isaiah that I didn’t mention in this post is F. B. Meyer’s book, Christ in Isaiah.
