The||40days|| journey of Lent has taken us along the road of acknowledging difficult things in our lives, turning from them, listening to God’s voice, and then following Jesus, our Leader. This week, we continue the journey with a focus around the theme: ‘live.’
At times, it might be easy to mistake the journey of these ||40days|| as only difficult or painful. We might be tempted to view confession, repentance, and sorrow as ends in themselves. But that is not Jesus’ way. Jesus came to seek and save that which was lost in order to bring us back into life with God. We hear Him say these very powerful words:
I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10, NIV)
Following Christ moves us through self-denial into deep and true life. At times we do not realize the damage done to us by sin within us and in the world around us. We are like a frog slowly cooking in a warming kettle, not realizing he is slowly nearing the boiling point and death. In a sense, God must pull us out of the water that surrounds us that we might be saved into true life.
From one perspective, the ||40days|| journey helps us to identify the ‘water’ that we wouldn’t otherwise see. Still, from another perspective, the ||40days|| journey is all about the goal of moving on from that ‘water’ into life. In another place, Jesus said:
The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life. (John 6:63, NIV)
As we hear the voice of God and we begin to follow Christ, He pours life-giving words into us; Spirit-saturated words. He leads us into the way of abundant, full life.
So, as we continue the journey this week, ask God to draw you into the depths of His life. Ask Him to speak words of life and Spirit that will ignite your days and years with abundant living. Ask Him to lead you into the ever more full life in Jesus Christ.
