This coming weekend at Eastbrook Church, we will begin a series entitled, “The Name.” This is the first of three short series from the book of Exodus that we will delve into over the next year.
This series will look at Moses’ encounter with God at the burning bush in Exodus 3 and 4, where God reveals who He is (His name) and, at the same time, reveals who Moses is.
St. Augustine said: “You have created us for Yourself, and our heart is not quiet until it rests in You.” If we were made by and for God, then the most important thing for us to develop in our lives is an appropriate understanding of God. When Moses encounters God at the burning bush, God reveals Himself in a way that is unique in the Hebrew Bible. God shares His name with Moses. The Name is more than just a word. It is a statement about the character and identity of God in general and in relation to human beings. All of us need to have a transforming encounter with the Name of God.
