A Prayer to our God, the Ancient One

William Blake, The Ancient of Days, watercolor etching; 1794.

“Yet God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.” (Psalm 74:12)

O Ancient One,
whose being precedes all we know
and whose word sparked all things,
whose holiness is unsearchable
and whose love is incomprehensible,
I worship You.

I worship You
with my words, stumbling as they are,
and with my life, humble as it is,
with my inner thoughts turned toward You,
and with my actions responding to You,
for You are worthy.

You are worthy
of more praise and honor
than one mouth could offer,
of more righteousness and justice
than one life could supply,
O Ancient One.

Holy God,
Holy and Mighty,
Holy Eternal One,
have mercy on me.
