A Prayer – after reflecting on the life of Moses

“Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.” (Deuteronomy 34:10-12)

“For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke 18:14b)

Thank You, LORD, for the example of Moses,
whose life towers over the Pentateuch
and sends a long shadow over all the Bible.

Thank You for his failures early that were redeemed,
for his insecurities that were overcome,
and his anger that flamed out with consequences.

Thank You for his boldness of faith against kings,
for his perseverance amidst rough trials,
and his deep longing to know You and see You.

I feel so small and insignificant
when I compare myself to Moses
or any of those like him in Scripture.

My life and times feel so much different,
yet there are still evil kings and raging powers,
still there are trials within and without.

Grow me, that like Moses I might be filled with faith,
that I might long for You more than any other,
and that I might see You, God, face to face.
